Is SEO Dead Because of AI?

Is SEO dead because of AI? Google says no, in writing.

Its guide to generative AI search, updated July 10, 2026, asks “Is SEO still relevant for generative AI search?” and answers “In short, yes!”

Google’s guide to generative AI search: “Is SEO still relevant for generative AI search? In short, yes!”

What Google says about AI search and SEO

What Google says about AI search and SEO fits in one line from its guide: the best practices for SEO “continue to be relevant” because Google’s generative AI features “are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems.” The same features highlight content from Google’s Search index, so the systems that rank pages also decide what the answers can draw on.

Google’s AI features page adds that AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra technical requirements: no special schema, no new machine-readable files.

What AI Overviews and AI Mode are

What AI Overviews and AI Mode are, in plain terms: AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries at the top of some Google results, with links to the pages they draw on. AI Mode is a separate, conversational way to search Google. Google said in May 2026 that AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users a year after its debut, with queries more than doubling every quarter.

Both run inside Google Search, on Google’s index. Neither one replaced the regular results, which still sit under the AI Overview and one tab away from AI Mode. TechCrunch reported AI Overviews above 2.5 billion monthly users after I/O 2026.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

Is GEO replacing SEO on Google? No, according to Google. The guide says terms like Answer Engine Optimization and Generative Engine Optimization “are common online,” but many suggested “hacks” aren’t effective or supported by how Google Search works.

It tells site owners to prioritize effective SEO over “AEO/GEO hacks,” and says Google Search ignores llms.txt files, which “will neither harm nor help” a site’s visibility in Google. That is why this office stamps “SEO is dead, buy GEO” pages as sales pitches.

How much traffic do AI chatbots send?

How much traffic do AI chatbots send? A sliver. Ahrefs measured 0.28% of total web traffic coming from AI chatbots in March 2026, across 74,752 sites. SE Ranking put AI sources at 0.32% of traffic across 101,574 websites from January 2025 to April 2026, against 42.75% from organic search.

Visits are not searches, either. SparkToro found that 97% of people who visit Google search actually search, while 56% of ChatGPT visitors send a prompt.

Do AI answers cite the pages that rank?

Do AI answers cite the pages that rank? Less than they used to, and this office won’t pretend otherwise. Ahrefs found that 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 for the same search in its March 2026 study, down from about 76% in July 2025. For AI assistants, the share was 12% in August 2025. Measured more loosely, seoClarity found that 56% of 5.1 million AI Overview citations came from the top 20 results across 362,000 US desktop searches in October 2025.

What Google does say is where its answers come from: its Search index and its ranking systems. A page outside the index has nothing to be cited for. Getting crawled, indexed and trusted is still the job, and that job is called SEO.

Did AI Overviews cut clicks?

AI Overviews did cut clicks, and the studies agree on the direction. Pew Research found that Google users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits that showed an AI summary, against 15% without one. A randomized field study, published as a draft in 2026, found 38% fewer organic clicks on searches that showed AI Overviews.

Google’s own line is that total organic clicks from Search have been “relatively stable” year over year (August 2025). Google also said in May 2025 that AI Overviews drive over a 10% increase in usage for the types of searches that show them, in the US and India. Either way, searches went up and clicks per search went down. That is a skill test, not a funeral.

What the AI obituaries got wrong

What the AI obituaries got wrong is what every obituary gets wrong: they mistook a change for a funeral. Gartner’s 2024 forecast of 25% less search volume by 2026 ran into record query numbers. TechCrunch’s “Google Search as you know it is over” was about Google’s product, and the LinkedIn posts that turned it into “SEO is dead” skipped Google’s own guide. The full record is in the case files.

How to show up in AI search

How to show up in AI search, per Google’s own guide, is the SEO checklist with a new coat of paint:

  • Get crawled and indexed. Google’s AI features highlight content from its Search index, so a page outside it can’t be highlighted.
  • Make content people can’t get anywhere else. The guide asks for valuable, non-commodity content.
  • Keep a clear technical structure. The guide says all existing technical SEO best practices continue to be worthwhile.
  • Keep local and product details accurate. For businesses, that is local SEO and product data by their real names.

No secret file, no special markup, no new acronym. If that list feels like a lot, that is the skill issue checklist talking.
